Halp!!!
So... my birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks and as usual I will be having a costume party. Yaye! :D Previous years have generally been pretty easy to pick costumes for (Angel & Demons, Victorian Gothic, Pirates, and Fucked-up Fairy Tales) but this year seems to be proving a lot harder than usual. The theme I picked for this year's party is "Dreams and Nightmares", and I have a couple of ideas, but I've found that a few of my friends have been having difficulty finding a good costume. By Dreams and Nightmares I essentially mean any film/TV show/book/play/poem/whatever that deals specifically with dreams or nightmares. Like Alice in Wonderland, for example, since it turns out that Wonderland and everything in it was all part of Alice's dream. The same goes for The Wizard of Oz, since it has a similar cop-out ending. :P Nightmare on Elm street would work for Nightmares, and I guess the Nightmare before Christmas would count... although that would be pushing it a bit, since the only link it has to dreams or nightmares is the title. But I'll let it slide. But those are pretty much all I can come up with. So... I come to you guys for help. Give me anything; any film, any book, any show, any play, any poem, anything that deals with dreams and/or nightmares that people could use for costume ideas. I am stuck. :S Current Mood: thirstyCurrent Music: rah rah, ah ah ah, roma romamaa, ga ga, ooh la la... |

End of Year Meme! And also, pimps
So, all hd_holidays entries are posted, and the Guess the writers post is up. You've got till January 16th to guess what everyone wrote. Am curious to see if anyone will guess mine :) Also! It's posting! About two fics a day, and so far there's been some real beauts :) :) :) :) And now, reveling in my ability to be on the computer for more than ten minutes at a time - and to even have a real keyboard, a luxury denied me during half of December - here's my version of the End of Year Fic Meme that's been going around. - Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, fewer than you thought, or about what you predicted?
Um... probably more than I thought I would. I did flood/drought in my last fandom - as in, from writing a few bloody novels a year to nothing for about three years - and expected to do the same here. Instead I'm... trickling. Possibly seeping.
( Ficlist 2009 )
- Where did you publish/archive your stories?
Lj, Pit of Voles, and skyhawke. Keep meaning to update FictionAlley. Some day.
Also, whoa! Just realized there's about five things I never got around to posting/finishing at skyhawke. Ooops!
- What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2009?
George Weasey/Angelina Johnson. For serious. The pairing squicked me something awful.
- What's your favourite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest?
Probably my hp_canon_fest, most probably because it's the last one I finished, and that's generally my favourite.
- Okay, NOW your most popular story.
Ah. Damn. No idea. Coyote Morning went over pretty well, I thought :)
- Story most under appreciated by the universe?
I always have trouble with this, because I never expect my stories to be particularly appreciated - 'cause I can see gaping flaws all over the place, in every one of 'em - so any appreciation is good, you know?
Maybe Guide those that through their councils? I dunno though, I was pretty pleased with the reception. Especially for a piece that was supposed to be sort of introspective, subdued, no flash, and posted in the company of writers and stories that would make anybody's writerly self-confidence quail a bit.
- Story that could have been better?
My hd_holidays. I had the best betas, got an unasked-for and much-appreciated extension on it from the mods, but the problem was that by the time I figured out why I was having so much trouble with one particular aspect of it, it was too late to do more than just sort of try to make it... work somehow.
OTOH, I did end up finding the SNL video "More Cowbell", and scrtkpr made a hilarious icon out of it, and all this would make so much more sense if I could explain it. But I can't, because part of why hd_holidays was tough to write was that I was writing hp_canon_fest at the same time, and why would that make any difference? Trust me, it did. Can't tell you why, though. Would love to. Can't. Had to do with a cowbell.
More Cowbell.
- Sexiest story?
::blinking:: Not sure I wrote that much sex...
::re-reads::
Ah, yes, I did! Yeah, that would probably be Coyote Morning, then.
- Most fun story?
To write, or to read? To write, that would probably be A Bit Unhealthy, just because I really got into trying to make something unworkable work. Or possibly my hp_canon_fest, because I [CENSORED FOR REASONS OF FEST SECRECY], though I maybe only [ALSO CENSORED].
To read? Dunno. Probably the last Ember to Ember extras. Or Coyote Morning.
- Story with single sweetest moment?
I can never answer this question.
- The story that made you cry?
My stories only make me cry with frustration. Though I did feel a bit blue for all I put poor George and Angelina through in A Bit Unhealthy. Ditto poor George and Lee in Coyote Morning.
- Hardest story to write?
hd_holidays. For the reason above.
This is making it sound like it's a sucky story, which I don't think it is - actually, I ended up really liking it - but it was a bitch to work on.
- Easiest story to write?
Weirdly enough, hp_canon_fest.
- Most overdue story?
Didn't have one. Maybe the Ember to Ember extras. Though I never set a time limit on those, so in the immortal words of Gandalf, "A wizard is never late: he always arrives precisely when he intends to."
Not sure that's the exact quote. Maybe the words aren't so immortal after all ;)
- Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Took one that I can't talk about, [SECRECY AGAIN] but which taught me that I can't do that particular writing trick.
And I tried to write for two fests at once. Which taught me the same thing.
::sigh:: More Cowbell.
- Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?
Not a single one.
Possibly write Ron/Harry again. I ache to enter the harryronbigbang, but am seriously chickening out. In part because of the harsh lesson of two fests at once. I'm already in for hpgeorgecentric.
- Total word count for 2009

Fetish post...
An interesting thing I've noticed among all the geeks I've met over the years is that a very large percentage of them seem to be kinky in some way or another. At a lot of geek conventions you'll find things like bondage workshops, or talks on BDSM... lots of people walking around on the end of a leash and lots of rubber, corsets, cuffs and collars. However, going the other way you find less of a cross-over. At least, I have. Most of the geeky people I meet are kinky, but not a lot of the kinky people I meet are geeky. If that makes sense? To meet a kinky geek I find I generally have to meet them in a *geeky* setting, like a con or a fan meet-up, as opposed to a *kinky* setting, like a club or a munch. So, taking all this into consideration, I wanted to ask if any of you had noticed something similar, and if so, why do you think there seems to be such a correlation between being a geek and being kinky? New Years...
Yesterday was awesome. I went to go see Potted Potter (last show of the DECADE!!!) with dora_the_nymph, lizardspots, unsymbolic, dr_ghost and lokifan. It was awesome, as usual, and they even took the piss out of Twilight. Good times. >:) After that, we went to Leicester Square and managed to find the only restaurant run entirely by aliens. it was weird. It was like 3rd Rock from the Sun... you know, how they assume human bodies, arrive on Earth, then have to fumble their way through life, learning how to be human and making really simple but ridiculous mistakes? Yeah. Like the guy who, upon seeing me dressed in Gryffindor robes, school uniform and round-framed spectacles, asked, in all seriousness, if I was Batman. Or the guy who poured lemon juice all over dora_the_nymph's pizza when she asked for chilli oil. We also discovered seeds in the pepper shaker and a downstairs section that smelled of toilet. o_0 But, whatever, the food was alright. And then we got ice cream. :D My ice cream had ginger bits chunks of raw ginger in it, which I was unaware of until I bit into them. Ouch! :( Then we all changed into warm clothes, scarves and funny hats (I wore the hat you sent me, Tray :D) and headed on down to the Thames to watch the fireworks. Got there early and had a couple of hours to hang around, drink some booze and queue for the toilet, and OMFG!!! People pushing into a 20-minute long queue? NOT ON!!!!! >:0 The fireworks themselves were absolutely AMAZING!!!! London really knows how to see in the New Year. :D Lots of pinks and rainbow colours this time, which amused me. Clearly Draco organised the display this year. ;P VIDEO!!! Then we all went back to my place, drank multi-coloured cocktails, played ridiculous drinking games and had random group therapy well into the early hours. I think we all finally stumbled into bed at 5:40am. 'Twas a good night indeed. :D HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! :D Current Mood: happy |

Recs?!
Think I started this post... about a month ago? Maybe? Adding on whenever I got more than five minutes online. December is a RL bitch. - First off, my own
hd_holidays fic! No, silly, not the one I wrote. That would be rather unrulerly unruly against the rules. The one that was written for me, by a lovely anonyperson! Title: Under the Influence Pairings: H/D Summary: When Harry is forced to take on a job that is far from what he is used to, he finds it an extra nuisance that he is being saddled with one Draco Malfoy; the one man in the whole wizarding world he most desperately wants to forget. Rating: R Warnings: DH-compliant but EWE, also not heeding any of JKR's interviews Length: ~12.500 Author’s Notes: Dear Annafugazzi, I really, really hope you enjoy the fic - I definitely had a lot of fun writing it! Many thanks to my terrific betas M and P. Excerpt: "Harry! Please." Malfoy cocked his head and smiled his crooked smile at Harry, that particular smile that curled the left corner of his mouth and never failed to make Harry want to jump and strangle him, or kiss him, instantaneously. Rec: Well, it's hard to know what to say about a fic written especially for you, because of course it's gonna hit a lot of your kinks, but I think what I liked most about this were the unexpected bits of prose that just came outta nowhere and caused my kids to look at me funny every time I chortled, whether it was at Ron's reaction to Harry working with Draco, or Luna's abominable and unidentifiable pet, or the... unexpected soap. Oh, and the slowly darkening mystery in the background? Very nice :) :) :)
- Next, one I have been (mostly) patiently waiting for ever since
miss_bowtruckle posted Green and said it had sidebars in ficlimbo. TITLE: Whispered Words PAIRING/CHARACTER/GENERAL SERIES: George Weasley/Hermione Granger GENRE: Het. PROMPT: 13 - Red RATING: Teen – suggestion of sex. WORD COUNT: 381 SUMMARY: George and Hermione enjoy a dance at their wedding reception. NOTES: Set in the same universe as my 2009 hermionebigbang fic, Green. Rec: Can't quote it, as it's only 381 words long, but I will say this: aaawww!!!
- Then, Percy/Oliver! No, really!
Title: Brilliant Author: Margot/ midnight_birth Pairing: Oliver/Percy Rating: NC-17 Warning: Alcohol abuse (one characrter gets smashed), scenes of explicit sexual nature. Info given by JKR in subsequent interviews about Percy’s future (wife and kids and all) is disregarded. Word Count: 4,098 Summary: As far as Percy is concerned, Oliver hasn’t ever cared for anything beside Quidditch. When Oliver brings a date to Harry and Ginny’s wedding, however, Percy is resolved that if Oliver is capable of noticing other blokes romantically, he should be one of them. Unfortunately, Percy is very stale at wooing, and Oliver isn’t looking for what Percy is prepared to give. Excerpt: Ginny looks beautiful, and Harry looks like he slept with a coat hanger in his mouth. Rec: I ::heart:: Percy. So, so much. And drunk Percy is a thing of beauty and a joy to behold.
- Title: Four Weddings and a Funeral
Author: ishafel Rated: PG Lenght: 501 words Pairings: Various Canon Pairings Summary: Five things that happened to the Blacks. Excerpt: Bellatrix is married in the spring, when war is still a game for children and a nightmare for old men. Rec: Um. Wow. Has a bit of a kick. A lovely kick, though, if kicks can be lovely.
- OK, I haven't read everything in
hp_darkfest, but must say that despite some absolute gems, this one is by far my favourite. A feeling echoed by quite a few folks, so it's likely a lot of my flist has already read it. Oh well. I actually had a tinge of disappointment when I found out the author was someone I knew, because I'd sort of wanted it to be somebody I'd never heard of, so I could read everything she'd ever written. It was rickey_a, whose fic I already know and love well, but hey! An excuse to go re-read! Not a bad thing! Anyway, here it is: Title: His Father's Son Pairing(s): Scorpius/Albus Severus, Draco/Astoria (implied) Summary: Scorpius Malfoy tries to find his own way in the world. Rating: NC-17 Word count: ~7,200 Warnings/Spoilers: Last time I tried using the highlight-to-read trick, a reader got involuntarily spoiled anyway. So I'll just invite you to go and read it, highlighting over the warning on the fic itself, and keep in mind it's from darkfest please. Excerpt: "I didn't want to intrude on your time with Albus. You seem to enjoy it so much, that I didn't want you to miss out by having to worry about your old father watching over you. You deserve to have him to yourself." Rec: To be honest, part of why I loved this so much was that it wasn't as dark as I'd been dreading. It still hurt - a lot - but there was beauty and hope in there as well.
- Title: Voodoo Child
Author: croatoan6000 Rating: PG-13 Pairing: H/D Words: 4,594 Warnings: mild violence, sexual references. Crack!fic Summary: Draco suspects Harry of cheating, and will go to any lengths to find out if he’s right... Prompts: Romantic comedy, cats, guns, brains, voodoo chicken. Excerpt: “Ginny!” Draco forced his face into a smile that made him look like he had stomach cramps. “You’re looking especially lovely today. That shirt really brings out your... um... breasts.” Rec: Oh, wow, brilliant crackfic. A perfect counterbalance to thoughty-plotty angst. Current Mood: accomplished |
